Angelika
Kirchschlager Bach: Arias Mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager explores the cantata arias of Bach on her new CD which also features the acclaimed Venice Baroque Orchestra, led by Andrea Marcon, and violinist Giuliano Carmignola. The recording includes arias from several Bach cantatas, as well as his Mass in B Minor, St. Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio. In addition, the Venice Baroque Orchestra performs the Sinfonia from Cantata No. 156. One of the most acclaimed mezzo-sopranos of her generation, the Austrian-born Kirchschlager sings a repertoire that reaches from Baroque to contemporary music. Kirchschlager's most recent Sony Classical release was When Night Falls (SK 64498), an award-winning collection of classical and popular lullabies, and she also won acclaim for her debut recording for the label, featuring the songs of Mahler and Korngold. |

Giuliano
Carmignola, Andrea Marcon Bach: Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord Bach's first biographer, Johann Nicolaus Forkel, recognized the unusual importance of the Six Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord, BWV 1014-1019 as early as 1802: Six Sonatas for the Clavier with the accompaniment of a violin obbligato. They were composed at Cöthen and may be reckoned among Bach's first masterpieces in this field. They are imitative throughout, and there are also a few canons between the clavier and the violin that are extremely melodic and full of character. The violin part requires a master. Bach knew the possibilities of that instrument and spared it as little as he did the clavier. That the violin and harpsichord parts call for master performers is clear from the present recording, in which Giuliano Carmignola and Andrea Marcon join forces on Baroque instruments to give a spirited reading of the demanding works. |
